当クラブについて／My concept for this club.

I will meet with 5 foreign students. Each of them will have their own reasons for learning Sumi-e. For example: one wants to learn more about Sumi-e, another, an exchange student wants to gain some experience before returning home, another wants new ideas for his own designs, and yet another to teach Sumi-e in the near future…

Some say that Japan has involved itself in collecting and preserving overseas cultures through trade, from historical heritage to modern technologies. Now, the day has come for Japan to open the door of its repository of culture to people around the world. Sumi-e was imported from China to Japan in the 13th century.However, as a word ‘Sumi-e’ is truly Japanese (not an import) and has been exported abroad.

Many people are interested in Japanese culture or cultural crossovers. So, when I considered opening a class for foreign students, it was with the idea that preserving the culture of Japan was no longer simply a Japanese preconception. It is important to consider an outsider’s perspective when approaching traditional culture.

Why hold the class in English

With these ideas in mind, I decided to introduce Sumi-e in the form of a one day workshop. Everything begins by developing an interest. The reason why I have chosen to hold the class in English isbecause I want Sumi-e to be accessible to more people. My hope is that it will be a worthwhile opportunity for all. Finally, Rimpa Sumi-e itself is a rare enough encounter. Please develop your own aesthetic sense of beauty rooted in Japanese tradition, and bring this beauty back home. I hope you will help it flourish.

「酒井先生の墨絵教室で感じてきた事」

私は酒井抱道先生の墨絵教室で、海外から来られた5名の方々とお会いしました。皆さんには墨絵を学ぶそれぞれの理由がありました。墨絵をもっと知りたい、留学生だが帰国する前に体験しておきたい、デザインの仕事のためにヒントが欲しい、自分も教えられるようになりたいなどでした。

「今までは日本は世界中の文化を集めて、それを保存してきたけれども、これからの時代はその「文化の倉庫」を、世界中の人のために開く時代なのではないか。」とは言われることです。水墨画も中国から伝わってきましたが、いまでは墨絵のほうが通りが良いそうです。

日本の文化、日本に伝わってきた文化を知りたい方はたくさんいらっしゃいます。そして、私は抱道先生のお教室でお会いした海外の方を通して実感したことがあります。それは、日本の文化を保存するのは、今や日本人だけではないという事です。

今これから私達が「伝統文化」を考える時に、ひとつの大切な発想となるのは、諸外国の方々も交えてという事ではないでしょうか。世界中の皆で、この日本に伝わってきて保存された文化に興味を持ち、皆でこれからも伝統にしていく事なのです。

「なぜ英語クラスをするのか」

このような考えから、私は一日体験という形で墨絵の紹介をはじめました。興味を持つことからすべてが出発します。英語による授業も、多くの皆さんに墨絵を体験して頂きたいからです。皆さんにもこれが良い機会であるように願っています。

また、琳派による墨絵は、それ自体が珍しいものです。日本で培われた美意識をどうぞ皆さんも体験して下さい。そして、琳派をそれぞれのお国へ持ち帰り、育てて下さる事を願ってやみません。
